Auditory Verbal Therapy

Millie was diagnosed with a profound hearing loss through newborn screening, She had a cochlear implant when she was 12 months old. Her parents and I worked together to help M to make sense of what she heard with her processors. It was a so great to see her progress learning to listen and talk.

“Karen has worked with our 2 year old daughter for over a year and helped her achieve the remarkable feat of age appropriate speech in this short timescale. A friendly and positive approach with parents, backed up by realistic goal setting with clear and concisely packaged take outs for easy everyday use has laid the foundation for Millie’s speech. We are greatly appreciative of how Karen combines her warmth and intelligence to deliver a great service”.

Teddy has a moderate bilateral hearing loss and wears two hearing aids.
It was great to work with Teddy his family. He learned to listen so well with his hearing aids and this laid the foundations for the development of his spoken language and early literacy skills.

"Of all the professionals we have met along our journey with Teddy so far, Karen has had the biggest positive impact on his ability to listen, hear and speak.

Her infectious positivity and expertly crafted sessions have produced results we couldn’t have imagined when Teddy was initially diagnosed with his hearing loss. As a result, we’ve reconsidered what we think success could look like for Teddy: not simply using age appropriate listening and speaking on a par with his fully hearing peers – but fulfilling his full potential, and staying ahead of the benchmark, despite his hearing loss.”

Teacher of the Deaf Support

As a Teacher of the Deaf, I have had the privilege of working with individual children and families over many years.

I worked with W’s family for more than 7 years from when he was baby through to junior school. He was diagnosed with a profound hearing loss through newborn screening.

“Karen came into our lives when our profoundly deaf son was diagnosed at 4 weeks old. She was our teacher of the deaf. Karen’s great knowledge, understanding, kindness, sensitivity and friendship was a vital lifeline at a difficult time for all of us. Over many years, she has gently educated us, without judgement, on the options available to us as parents. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Karen to any family.”

Building a relationship with the staff working with individual children enhances the support for them in class.

“Karen worked with two of our pupils - training teachers, assessing the suitability of our facilities for the girls, and guiding us to ensure the arrangements we made were as close to excellent as they could be. The pupils thrived in our setting and achieved brilliantly. Karen was able to show us how to develop our expertise to accommodate children who are deaf, which we had not done before. The girls were more than capable of meeting the challenge of our curriculum and we were able to make the logistics of the school work for them, thanks to Karen’s patience and support. She is an excellent practitioner and trusted colleague who had exactly the right combination of specialist knowledge and gravitas.”
