Teacher of the Deaf advisory support

I offer independent advisory support as a Teacher of the Deaf to children with a hearing loss, their families and staff in schools.  I am an experienced Teacher of the Deaf and have worked with deaf children from 0-16 years in a range of education settings for 30 years. I provide individual, tailored support which may include: training on the impact of hearing loss and strategies to support a child with a hearing loss in class, observation, feedback and advice on supporting listening, language, literacy & social skills, and one to one work with the child / young person.  I can offer high quality, comprehensive advisory support to individual children, their families and schools. 

Many parents are concerned that staff working with their deaf child in school are not fully aware of the implications of their deafness and how best to support them. I offer training and in-class support to teachers and teaching assistants to build their knowledge and share techniques to enhance access to the curriculum and help the children to achieve their full potential.

Some deaf pupils in schools may experience difficulties with social interaction, which may be related to a number of factors including difficulties around communication and understanding and interpreting the feelings and behaviours of others. I share practical strategies to support children’s developing theory of mind and social and emotional learning to help them to make and keep friends. As each child progresses through school, my aim is to support them to develop self awareness and learn self advocacy skills to become confident young adults.

I can provide individual assessments of listening, spoken language and literacy skills. I can also contribute to Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and the Education, Health & Care Plan EHCP assessment process by providing written reports describing an individual child’s needs and strategies to support them.
